Chapter 5 - Posting and Searching

We learned in Chapter 2 how to put together Open Graph, Twitter Cards, Meta Tags and Schema.org and in Chapter 3 making sure we support as many operating systems and mobile devices within reason. Chapter 4 reminded us of old school tools that are still effective today. Let's put it all together.

When is the best time of day to post?
What are hashtags?
Can I schedule posts?
How do I increase my place with search engine rankings?

Let's look at some of the answers to these questions.

Timing of Posts

There are several artices within the interweb about the best times to post and for which platform.

"The best time to post on Instagram is from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. Monday to Friday."
"The best time to post on Twitter is at 3 p.m. Monday to Friday."
"The best times to post on Facebook are Wednesday at noon and 2 p.m. and Thursday at 1 and 2 p.m."

These times are great for locally posting but we all have people and businesses in our networks that are globally. Let's look at the US and population.

MetricMaps

47.6% of the population resides on the eastern time zone.
29.1% of the population resides on the central time zone.
That is 76.7% of the total population of the US.

Let's face it most of us always have our phones on us. We use them for alarm clocks and when we are in the bathroom for the first time of the day. We use them during our breaks and lunch times at work and when we are waiting for our kids to be picked up at school. There is unwind time when we get ready for bed as well. So, there are peak times throughout the day to post but there is a big difference when the post is local vs national vs global. I am in California, so I cater to the East and Central time zones before I post locally. Check out when the best times to post for all social media platforms.

ET: 6AM-8AM, 11AM-1PM, 7-10PM (local to West Coast)
CT: 5AM-8AM, 10AM-1PM, 6-10PM (East to Local to West Coast)
MT: 4AM-8AM, 9AM-1PM, 5-10PM (East to Central to Local to West Coast)
PT: 3AM-1PM, 4-10PM (You get the idea)

The East and Central time zone have the advantage to start local and span out nationally as the day moves forward. The West Coast has a good amount of time to cover for the east coast but you won't see me up at 3AM on most nights but I can look into scheduling posts to take advantage of the early morning east coast hours while I get some good sleep.

Hashtags

"A hashtag is a type of metadata tag used on social networks such as Twitter and other microblogging services, allowing users to apply dynamic, user-generated tagging which makes it possible for others to easily find messages with a specific theme or content. Users create and use hashtags by placing the number sign or pound sign # usually in front of a word or unspaced phrase in a message. The hashtag may contain letters, digits, and underscores." - Wikipedia

Proper use of hashtags will increase your visibility 10-15% but just like overloading Meta tags and Schema, overuse can make them pointless and inefficient. Keep them simple and relevant.

#marketing, #digitalmarketing, #SEO, #marketingstrategy would be good tags for this article.

Searching

It can take months of searching for your site with your favorite search engines before you even showing up in the listings. It can take up to 6 months to get a decent ranking depending on your enthusiasm and number of participants you have searching for your site. The best place to start is with your URL. This is the most basic search you can do. Does my URL show up?

My site does show up. My resume and the second chapter written a few days ago has made the list. This does not mean it will show up with other search terms.

The next search should be the name of the company or individual. My name is rather unique and shows up on the first page. I did a search for "Bachelder Information Systems" and my site showed up on the fourth page. "Wade Information Systems" does not show up at all. Meta tag Keywords don't have the any affect with search engines anymore, but we know that Title and Description are still supported. Mix and match your search terms using your name, name of company, Title and Description meta tags. Take your time and try to find your site within the top 150 results. Keep track of these search terms and come back to them at another time and try again if your site is not found. Keep searching with successful search terms and watch your site climb up the charts. Searching is geographical regarding your network and location. Your mobile device can assist you while you are outside of your work and home networks by using your cellular network. When I leave my house or workplace, I take some time to do some searching. When I leave town for business is another great opportunity to search and build my results. Eventually "Information Systems" will have my site within the results.

There are other options such as paid search engine services to help out with your placement in the results.

Scheduled Posts

Scheduling post will help you reach your audience when you are not physically available to post your content. This is the part where a budget comes in handy as scheduling posts are included in a paid subscription depending on the platform.

Start creating your post at the top of your Page's timeline.
Click next to Publish and select Schedule.
Below Publication, select the date and time when you want the post to publish.
Click Schedule.

Paid Services

This is the part of the show where I need some help. I've been able to create my Open Graph, Twitter Cards, Meta Tag and Schema. I have support for desktop, mobile and browsers. I'm building links and other old school techniques. I'm building my audience by increasing my search rankings. All is great, but this is a slow and difficult process. This is when having a budget helps.

You have your ducks in order and depending on your budget you might want to adopt paid services to build your brand or schedule posts. There are many solutions where you can throw your money and get good results. Here are some of the options.

Ads and Post Boosting - "When you create posts on your Facebook Page, sometimes you'll see a blue Boost Post button appear after you publish the post."

Ads and LinkedIn Premium - "Advertising on LinkedIn helps businesses of any size achieve their goals. "

Ads and Promoted Tweets - "Promoted Tweets are ordinary Tweets purchased by advertisers who want to reach a wider group of users or to spark engagement from their existing followers."

Ads and Promoted Pins - "The Promoted Pins you see are based on your activity on an advertiser's site or on Pinterest."

Ads and Promoted Posts - "Drive awareness, increase customers and share your story among a highly engaged audience."

AdSense - "With billions of searches per day on Google, you can use search ads to make sure potential customers notice your brand, consider your offerings, and take action."

There are other services like HootSuite, SproutSocial, Zoho, Later and PostCron to name a few, but you'll have to do the research to see which one fits your needs.

Conclusion

When is the best time to post? Who knows, there is data suggesting there are peak times when usage of the social platform is at its peak, but does that mean their algorithm will show your content to these users? If your post is influenced by inspiration, then you should post it when you feel the time is right. If you have a campaign that you want to run, then it might be best to schedule and post during peak times. You could pay to have your post reach a greater audience regardless of the time of day.
